We offer EMT courses regularly during convenient times to accomodate your schedule.
This course is the required course for any person seeking to become a state certified Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B). The course is based on the Department of Transportation's (DOT) EMT-Basic curriculum. This course has been developed for individuals who desire to perform emergency medical care. A pre-requisite for this course is a current CPR certification at the level of BLS Healthcare Provider (A.H.A). No other prior medical experience or training is required of the course applicant.
The material covered in this course is divided into 7 modules. They are: Preparatory, Airway Management, Patient Assessment, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Infants and Children and Operations. A brief description of each module follows.
Module 1 - Preparatory Topics covered in this module are: EMS systems, the role of the EMT-Basic, the safety and well-being of the EMT-Basic, legal and ethical issues, basic anatomy and physiology, techniques of lifting and moving patients.
Module 2 - Airway Management Topics covered in this module are: airway anatomy, airway management techniques, oxygen and oxygen equipment
Module 3 - Patient Assessment Topics covered in this module are: assessment of the medical and trauma patients, vital sign assessment, taking a patient history, documentation, and communication
Module 4 - Medical Emergencies Topics covered in this module are: pharmacology, respiratory, cardiac, diabetic, allergy, poisoning and overdose, environmental, behavioral and obstetrical / gynecological emergencies
Module 5 - Trauma Emergencies Topics covered in this module are: bleeding and shock, soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, injuries to the head, neck, spine, chest and abdomen.
Module 6 - Infants & Children Topics covered in this module are: physical and physiological differences between adult and pediatric patients, pediatric medical and trauma emergencies
Module 7 - Operations Topics covered in this module are: ambulance operations, rescue and extrication, multiple patient situations, hazardous materials situations
Admission Acceptance Requirements
- Must be 17 years of age by the first day of clinical rotations.
- Students must 18 years of age and have either a High school diploma or GED in order to certify with Texas.
- Criminal history/background check
- Proof of Immunizations or positive titer test are required for clinical rotation.
Immunizations required are: § Negative Tb test or Chest X-ray § Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) § Tetanus Diphtheria (Tdap), § Varicella (Chicken Pox), § Hepatitis B Vaccine (HBV) series
- Students should be in good general health and physical condition.

Successful completion of the course will allow the student to be considered eligible to take the certifying exams. This course does not certify students as an EMT-Basic at the completion of the course. Only a state agency may do so.In order for the student to be eligible to take the state certifying exam at the end of the course, the student must:
1. Successfully complete attendance hours as dictated by the state.
2. Successfully pass the course according to the standards set by the ProAction Policies and Procedures Manual.
3. Successfully pass NREMT Basic skills examinations administered as part of the course.
4. Complete the required clinical rotations (hospital and ambulance).
5. Full payment of the course tuition.
Course Options:
NIGHT COURSE
· 12 weeks of didactic and skills instruction
· Classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 6pm to 10pm
· One Saturday class may be required to complete Clinical Orientation, drug test and any shots required for the program.
FAST TRACK
· 6 weeks of intensive didactic and skills instruction
· Classes are Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm
· One Saturday class may be mandatory to complete Clinical Orientation, urinalysis ($17.00) and any shots required for the program (free, cost is already included in tuition)
